About area rugs
When it comes to area rugs, Universal Carpet has many different materials, styles, shapes, and patterns available to you. We work with both residential and commercial property owners, and we will help you to choose the best rug for your location based on your needs and spending budget. We realize how difficult it can be to choose the right rug when you are given so many options. However, when you take things one step at a time, you will be able to select the best materials and styles for your home or commercial location.
First, you will need to determine what technique you want used in the rug's construction. Even today, some weaving techniques have been used for over hundreds of years and are still being used! Hand-woven area rugs take the longest time to make since there is a lot of attention to detail. There are also machine-made rugs that do no take nearly half the time to produce when compared to materials made by hand. Below are some of the most common construction techniques that you have to choose from.

Rug-making techniques
- Hand-Knotted
This is likely the most labor-intensive technique. Master weavers tie knots to warp yarns which make up the entire length of the rug. These knots eventually create the surface of the rug itself. The more knots, the more durable and lasting the rug is going to be. - Tufted
These are much simpler and faster to produce. Loops of yarn are pulled through the rug's backing material by a machine. The loops can then be sheared to create a very smooth and beautiful surface. - Hooked
This technique is similar to tufting, but the yarn loops always stay intact. With a hooked rug, the yarn loops are pulled through the backing material by a machine. Rather than being sheared, the loops are left alone. This makes for an embroidered look and feel. - Flat-Woven
This technique makes a rug that does not have a pile. The rug's vertical yarns are woven through the horizontal yarns. This technique can be done by hand or by a machine. - Braided
Like flat-woven rugs, this technique also creates a rug that does not have a pile. Braided rugs are reversible, meaning that both sides can be used. Yarns of the rug are braided into a continuous rope that is eventually sewn together in a special pattern.

Area rug cleaning tips
Taking care of most types of area rug materials is fairly simple and straight-forward. Be sure that you are vacuuming the rug regularly to extend its life, and to prevent the build-up of dirt, dust, and debris. This is especially important if the rug is placed next to an entryway where people may be tracking in a lot of grime from the outdoors. If the rug is reversible, be sure that you are vacuuming each side of it to prevent irregular wear and tear.
It is important that you clean up food and drink spills immediately when they happen with specially-designed stain removers that are made for the materials in the rug that you have. Be sure that excess water used when removing the spill is dried properly to prevent it from ruining the floor below.
It will also be helpful to brush out pet hair from the rug. This can be done using a stiff brush, and you should comb in the direction of the nap of the rug. Often times, even with regular vacuuming, pet hair can be left behind. This can cause your rug to become discolored over time, or cause problems for people in your home who suffer from allergies.
You should also turn your rug at least one time per year. This can prevent extra stress being applied to the rug, especially if it is close to an entrance, or if it is in a spot of direct sunlight from a window.
If the rug is small enough, you can also shake it out to remove stubborn dirt and grime that may have built-up.
Professional carpet cleaning will be recommended for the rug at least once a year for a thorough, deep-cleaning.
